The main aim of the Imaging & Observing Group (IOG) is to provide an informal and social setting for members to enjoy the hobby, and to learn from the knowledge and experience of others. We often have specific topics at each meeting, at other times we just share images and observations, discuss them, techniques used, equipment and software.

We talk about many subjects including the objects we’re observing, telescopes, cameras and associated accessories, so it’s a great place to learn about astronomy.

We also have a very active WhatsApp group for members which is very active and sometimes hold virtual observing events together.

We have started our own ASE Messier Project » where we will try and image as many Messier objects as we can as a group. We have also added the ASE Caldwell Project and ASE Lunar 100 Project.

Any ASE member can take part and there’s a link to our active WhatsApp group on the Members website. Meetings used to be held at Juniper Green Village Hall but are now ONLINE as there are so many of us. We have a Flickr group, which is viewable by the public. Dates of meetings are shown lower down this page and on the Event Calendar page.

The group is open to all members of the Astronomical Society of Edinburgh, from complete novices to seasoned astronomers. And even if you don’t do any imaging or observing, come along anyway and chat about images, imaging, observing and astronomy in general. It’s a pretty informal and friendly meeting so please try us out sometime.

We used to be just the Imaging Group but have changed to represent what we are actually about and to be as inclusive as possible for active astronomers in the Society.
