Geminid meteors possibly the best of the year, Supermoon, Regulus occultation, Comets, Saturn and Jupiter

The Geminid meteor shower is the highlight of the month, with peak rates expected to exceed 110 meteors per hour. The Moon will stay well out of the way at maximum, ensuring dark skies. December also brings another “Supermoon,” as the Moon reaches perigee at the same time as the full phase.

On 7 December, the Moon and Jupiter will make a close approach, passing within 3°36′ of each other. The Moon will be 17 days old at the time.

The Winter Solstice occurs on 21 December, marking the shortest day of 2025 in the northern hemisphere.

The Moon occults the brightest star in the constellation of Leo, Regulus on 10 Dec, visible from Edinburgh with the disappearance of Regulus (Alpha Leonis) behind the Moon at 07:16 GMT in the south-western sky at an altitude of 39.1 degrees. Its reappearance will be visible at 08:18 GMT, though in much brighter morning skies.

Both Saturn and Jupiter are prominent in the evening sky with Jupiter becoming more easily accessible in the early evening, bright at mag. -2.6.

The 3rd interstellar object discovered, 3I/ATLAS, is visible in the early morning sky and fading on its way out of our solar system. On 1 Dec it rises at 01:26 GMT and reaches an altitude of 33° above the southern horizon. Watch the recent talk about this fascinating object given by Dr Darryl Z. Seligman.

Comet C/2025 R2 (SWAN) is still easily visibly in the evening skies though getting much fainter now, round about mag. 12. C/2025 K1 (ATLAS) continues to be visible and has now broken up, with three parts that were clearly visible (no longer). It is now circumpolar so visible all night but getting fainter.

Jupiter is currently approaching opposition and is visible as a morning object. From Edinburgh, it is visible in the morning sky, becoming accessible around 19:01, when it reaches an altitude of 7° above your north-eastern horizon. It will then reach its highest point in the sky at 02:16, 55° above your southern horizon. It will be lost to dawn twilight around 08:05, 19° above your western horizon.

Saturn is currently an early evening object, now receding into evening twilight. From Edinburgh, it is visible in the evening sky, becoming accessible around 16:39 (GMT), 26° above your south-eastern horizon, as dusk fades to darkness. It will then reach its highest point in the sky at 18:19, 29° above your southern horizon. It will continue to be observable until around 22:27, when it sinks below 11° above your south-western horizon.

The Geminid meteor shower will be active from 4 December to 17 December, producing its peak rate of meteors around 14 December.

From Edinburgh, the radiant point is above the horizon all night, which means that the shower will be active throughout the hours of darkness.

The shower is likely produce its best displays in the hours around 02:00 GMT, when its radiant point is highest in the sky.

The shower is expected to reach peak activity at around 08:00 GMT on 14 December 2025.

From Edinburgh, the radiant of the shower will appear at a peak altitude of 67° above your horizon, and on the basis of this, we estimate that you may be able to see up to 110 meteors per hour at the shower’s peak.

The shower will peak close to new moon, and so moonlight will present minimal interference.

The parent body responsible for creating the Geminid shower has been identified as asteroid 3200 Phaethon.

Perseus is a northern constellation which appears highest in the evening sky in the months around November.

It is prominent from dark sites, having 16 stars of fourth magnitude or brighter. However, only two of these are prominent from light-polluted locations: Mirfak and Algol.

Perseus is perhaps best known for the Perseid meteor shower, one of the best annual meteor showers, whose radiant lies close to η-Per.

The Milky Way also passes through this area of the sky, where it forms a particularly broad band of deep sky objects, including over a dozen bright open clusters.

Among these, the most celebrated are NGC 884 and NGC 869, known as the double cluster.
