We had a really enjoyable members night on Friday with a number of short presentations from members. The personal stories and journeys were really fascinating and well-told.
President Mark Phillips provided an introduction and some news items as well as giving an update on ASERO – our plans for a remote observatory in Spain
Ria Urban told us her story of her journey from her home in Hungary to space journalism in Edinburgh. A really good story showing that you can change your career as many times as you like and live your dreams.
Alan Pickup gave us a comprehensive rundown of the night sky in April. You can see his monthly Sky Diary for April 2023 on our website.
Douglas Heggie told about his journey as a member of the ASE’s Fellowship of Junior Astronomers, run by Norman Matthews in the 1950-60’s. He showed us some fascinating extract from his observing log books and how they were encouraged to record their observations. He also compared some of his observations with what we see today in some of our images.
Mark Phillips showed the entries for the Image of the Quarter competition and revealed the winner as Pat Devine for his excellent image of M31 Andromeda Galaxy.
Will Joy, the ASE’s librarian, brought along a number of interesting books from our library for members to browse at the end.
A really good evening and we’ll definitely do another members night again soon.
