Clara Brasseur gave us an excellent talk on Friday about turning astronomical data into sounds. Quite different from anything else we’ve had but very creative and engaging.
Clara started by showing us some simple conversions of data into sounds such as straight lines, angles and curves. Then actual light curves from exoplanets and stellar flares were covered followed by a fun quiz to identify the number of exoplanet transits we could hear or flares. There were also some more complex data sets which created some very interesting sounds. Clara answered many questions from both Zoom and YouTube. Everyone as clearly engaged with the talk on both channels and took part in the quizzes.
The main tool Clara uses is ATRONIFY, which is a Python based tool which you can download and install yourself.
Definitely worth watching if you missed it.
