Scottish Astronomy Weekend 1999

The 13th Scottish Astronomy Weekend will be held on September 10 to 12 at the University of Dundee. Accommodation, meals and all meeting facilities will be provided at Belmont Hall of Residence, which is within the main University precinct at the west end of the town, about 15 minutes walk from the centre and from the railway station.

Dundee itself has much to offer the visitor, with fine museums and galleries, and is surrounded by pleasant countryside. Hills, beaches and historic towns such as Perth, Arbroath, Kirriemuir and St Andrews are within easy reach by public transport, so it may be worth while for the far-travelled delegate to consider staying a little longer!

There will be no "main theme" to this year's programme; as in 1997 we are offering a variety of topics by expert and entertaining speakers, including

and hopefully the weather may allow some viewing from the Mills Observatory. For the Saturday afternoon we have the options of either a bus trip through the Angus Countryside to historic Glamis Castle (birthplace of the Queen Mother), or you can "do your own thing" e.g. visit the historic ships "Unicorn" and the "Discovery" with its Visitor Centre and audio-visual presentation - one of the best in Britain, or visit Broughty Ferry with its pleasant shops, beach and Castle museum, or just explore the City free brochures and maps can be provided. You may even have time for a quick visit to St Andrews, only 11 miles away.

Please indicate on the form which Option interests you. Although this is not "binding" it is important that we have approximate numbers soon so that transport and other arrangements can be booked.

Please complete the enclosed form and send it with a Deposit for £20 (or if you are non-resident and are attending for one or two days only £7), making cheques payable to "SCOTTISH ASTRONOMY WEEKEND" to: Dr David Gavine, 29 Coillesdene Crescent, Edinburgh EH15 2JJ (phone 0131 657 2338).

Please send them back by 31 July if you are staying at Belmont Hall. Non residents MUST, however, book by the end of August. Your Conference Fee will include tea or coffee during the meeting sessions.

The balance is to be paid before, or at, Registration on Friday 10 September at Belmont Hall.

A final programme of events will be sent to each delegate in good time before the Weekend.

I hope you enjoy the programme and your visit to Dundee.

David Gavine.
