Summer 2009 Programme of Meetings

Please note that meetings are no longer at the City Observatory.

This summer our meetings take place at the Augustine Church, George IV Bridge, EH1 1EL. Meetings are open to the public and start at 8pm. We are always happy to see new faces.

Moonwatch Sessions at the Calton Hill
These will be held in the car park outside the observatory from 7pm to 9pm each evening (weather permitting)
 
April 3rd Ordinary Meeting with a showing of the movie
"Eyes on the skies - 400 years of telescopic discovery"
This movie is available to purchase or to watch online.
 This meeting is at the Augustine Church.
 
April 4th to 18th The Edinburgh International Science Festival includes a number of events of astronomical interest.
April4th to 18th "From the Earth to the Universe" is a beautiful exhibition of astronomical images on display in the gardens at St Andrew Square.
April9th "Copernicus and the Astrological Prognosticators of Cracow and Bologna" by Professor Robert Westman of the University of California, San Diego. This event is part of the Crawford Project of the University of Edinburgh.
April10th "Doing Astronomy from Scotland: The Scottish Royal Astronomers and Lord Crawford's Treasure Trove of Astronomical Books" with Professors Owen Gingerich and John Brown. This event is part of the Crawford Project of the University of Edinburgh.
April11th "An MOT for Hubble: Servicing the Greatest Space Telescope" by Dr John Mason.
April18th "2009: A Space Odyssey I - From Galileo to Hubble & Backyard Telescopes" and
"2009 - A Space Odyssey II - Galileo's Big Bang Ceilidh"
These have been arranged by members of the ASE - Lorna McCalman and Charlie Gleed along with Prof John Brown (one of our Honorary Presidents) so we hope to see a good turn-out from ASE members.

  "A night in the life of the Very Large Telescope"
