Various members of the Society engage in observing programmes, on their own, or as part of e.g. sections of the British Astronomcial Association. Popular subjects are sunspots, variable stars, noctilucent cloud, and aurora.
The Astronomical Society of Edinburgh offers three particular activities:
- The dark site can be used by members on their own or in groups.
- The Imaging Group meets regularly to show images, chat about software, etc.
- The Algol project encourages amateur astronomers to check out the brightest variable star whenever possible, and to collect brightness estimates made with the human eye (no instruments whatsoever needed) or with digital cameras.
